Two sources of possible assistance
The Suffolk County Septic Improvement Program may provide up to $20,000 per property. The New York State Septic System Replacement Program may cover up to 75% of eligible costs, capped at $25,000 per property.
County SIP funds are generally paid directly to an approved installer after installation. State funds may be paid to an approved installer or reimbursed to the property owner, according to the program rules.

Minimum property conditions
The official program currently lists several threshold conditions. Meeting them does not mean an application is approved.
- An existing one- or two-family residence, or a single-family home with one accessory apartment
- A cesspool or septic system being replaced, with no sewer connection or proposed sewer-area conflict
- A valid Certificate of Occupancy and current town tax bill
- Current property taxes, no liens or foreclosure, and a deed on file
- County health approval for the proposed I/A project
Costs homeowners should still plan for
Permit fees are not grant-eligible according to the county. Engineering and design, landscaping restoration, maintenance and some site-specific work may also remain the homeowner’s responsibility.
A renovation or addition can change the approval path. Ask a design professional and the Office of Wastewater Management which applications apply before work begins.
